AAN designer An Sunyoung, who became a designer due to her Hanbok (a traditional Korean costume) designer mother’s influence, says that she is a designer who dresses the soul. She seeks the beauty of drapes that flow with the body’s silhouette and wants women to aspire to a strong inner beauty as opposed to a glamorous exterior.
Sunyoung was born in September 1981 and has graduated Fashion Design from Kookmin University. Her dream as a child was to become an ocean explorer or an astronaut. She wanted to blend in with all the other students in her school but she was too thin and tall and she stood out like a sore thumb. Her difference has become her strength and she has forged ahead as a designer with a unique point of view.
Sunyoung got her big break in 2007. She was a university student and participated in SBS Rising Designer Contest. She won the first prize and was given the chance to debut at the 2009 Seoul Collection – the door was opened and Sunyoung’s fate as a designer was sealed.
After her debut at Seoul Collection Sunyoung struggled for 2 years while studying abroad in London. One day, while organizing her closet, she decided that she wanted to make clothes that she would want to wear, that appealed to her personally. She eventually opened an office at Shinsa-dong in 2012 and launched ANN ANASTASIS.
Sunyoung wanted to add an extra A infront of her last name AN to give it a more special meaning. A couple of years later, the definition of AAN become the acronym of the Hebrew word ANASTASIS. She came across the meaning of the word by chance when she was reading a book and the word touched her heart. ANASTASIS means “to stand, to be awaken, to reborn” in Hebrew. And with those words borrowed from the ancient language of the chosen people, Sunyoung has created a brand that is a breath of fresh air in the Korean fashion scene.
